Dr. George T. Stokes

One of the earliest professional historians to record the history of the Parish of Athlone was the Rev G.T. Stokes, a native of the town who was born in 1843. He studied at Galway Grammar School and at Queen's College, Galway before completing his studies at Trinity College Dublin.
A member of a prominent Church of Ireland family living in Tholsel Place (later Victoria Place and now Custume Place), George Thomas Stokes studied for the Church.

He was ordained in 1866 and appointed as curate of St. Patrick's parish, Newry the following year. In 1883 he was appointed to the chair of Ecclesiastical History at Trinity College. In 1887 Dr Stokes was appointed Librarian of Marsh's Library, Dublin. In the same year he was elected to membership of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland. He was a frequent contributor to the prestigious journal of that society.

Stokes wrote guides to Blackrock (Co. Dublin) and his native Athlone as well as major works on "Ireland and the Celtic Church" and "Ireland and the Anglo-Norman Church". At the time of his death in 1898 he was engaged in presenting a major series of lectures on 'Great Irish Churchmen of the 18th Century" and these were posthumously published in 1900 as "Some Worthies of the Irish Church".
