Harry Rice

Though born in Portarlington in 1894 Harry Rice was closely identified with Athlone. He was educated at Enniskillen and Trinity College where he qualified as a doctor. He served with the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I and later as Port Embarkation Officer in Brussels.
Following his release from the British Army he joined the Indian Army where he served for a further twenty-five years.

He had a close relationship with Athlone as two of his sisters had married Chapman brothers of Athlone Printing Works. In 1922 he married his first wife, Lillian Geoghegan, a daughter of the proprietor of the Prince of Wales Hotel, Athlone. After her death in 1951 he married Cynthia MacWeeney.

Harry Rice retired to Athlone and wrote a weekly column for The Westmeath Independent. He was a founder member of the Inland Waterway Association of Ireland and the author of a classic book on the Shannon "Thanks for the memory" originally published in 1952 and reprinted a number of times since.
