Trip to Clonmacnoise and Belmont Mill
As part of our contribution to National Heritage Week, Athlone

have organised a boat trip to Clonmacnoise monastic site followed
by a coach trip to Belmont Mill on Saturday 20th August.

Structural damage to Fr. Mathew Hall
Serious structural damage is obvious to the east elevation
of Fr. Mathew Hall and there is also damage to the river bank
retaining wall. Could this be a result of the recent pile
driving?

It came as no surprise to Athlone Architectural Heritage Group
to read that work has stopped on the art gallery development
at Fr. Mathew Hall site as builders encountered a suspected
significant archaeological find.

Athlone Town Council want to demolish architectural gem
On 22nd December, 2010, O'Neill's Pub was gutted by fire.
On inspecting the beautiful brick facade following the fire,
it isapparently remained safe, intact and obviously structurally
sound. Athlone Town Council served a notice on the owners
on 7th April, requiring them to demolish it forthwith.

A
sad day for Athlone's heritage
Athlone Town Council have commenced work on the controversial
contemporary art gallery at Fr Mathew Hall. Today, contractors
are working at removing trees from the promenade to make way
for building works.

The theme of the Athlone Architectural Heritage entry concerned

O'Connor R.I.P.
Our esteemed member, Mr James (Jimmy) O'Connor sadly passed
away on 3rd March 2011. Jimmy was Hon President President

Important art associated with Athlone
We are delighted to announce that the National Gallery of
Ireland have given us permission to exhibit copies of two
very important pieces from the 'Taking Stock Acquisitions
2000-2010' which is currently on show in Dublin. The framed
copies will form a central part of our future 'Old Athlone'
exhibitions.

Workhouse
float in 2010 St. Patrick's Day Parade
As part of our heritage awareness programme, Athlone Architectural
Heritage Group entered a float in the Athlone St. Patrick's
Day Parade, commemorating the hardship endured by the unfortunate
citizens who had to reside in the town's workhouse during
the Great Famine.

Old
Athlone on display
To promote an awarness of our town's heritage, Athlone Architectural
Heritage Group held an 'Old Athlone Exhibition'
in the Aidan Heavey Public Library for one week from 22nd
to 28th January. It comprised of a collection of photos depicting
old Athlone buildings and personalities of note.

National Heritage Week 2009 - Old Athlone Exhibition
The
Athlone Architectural Heritage Group held an 'Old Athlone' exhibition
in St. Mary's Hall on Saturday 22nd August as part of their participation
in National Heritage Week. The Athlone Architectural Heritage Group's

was also officially launched at the event.

Athlone Town Council's revised plan for Fr. Mathew Hall revealed
Here is an artist's impression of Athlone Town Council's latest proposal
for an art gallery in the Fr. Mathew Hall. We would welcome your comments
at Athlone Architectural
Heritage Group if you object to their plan. Please make a submission
to Athlone Town Council making your feelings known. You are also welcome
to join our group.

There
is a time limit for receipt of submissions
Plans
and particulars of the proposed development may be inspected at the
Civic Centre, Church Street, Athlone from January 17th to February
16th 2009.
Submissions or observations in respect of the proposed development
dealing with the proper planning and sustainable development of the
area in which the proposed development will be situated may be made
to the Athlone Town Council not later than March 3rd 2009.
Would you like to see the Fr Mathew Hall restored?
Would you like to see the John McCormack Museum in there along with
the Tourist Office?
Would you like to see this building designated as a protected structure.
